The Great Yorkshire Traction Engine Club once again held a successful rally at Duncombe Park, Helmsley over the first weekend in July. With around 50 full size engines among the many other exhibits there was plenty to see for visitors from both near and far. Making its public debut following major work and looking resplendent was Richard Preston’s Burrell showmans engine No 3526 Lightning II. It was roaded some 20 plus miles to the event along with Burrell Gold Medal tractor No 3618 The Scout. Another engine which has had a complete repaint over the winter period is Graham Atkinson’s Garrett showman’s tractor Princess Maud. This was lined up alongside his Gavioli organ backed stage with further engines from his collection, His Lordship, Excelsior and recent acquisition Foden wagon No1742. Four other Fodens were also present Ian Thompsons No 13218, Stuart Richie’s No 13536 and the Barrack families No 9580 and No 11444 down from Aberdeen. The Scottish contingent was further strengthened by Sentinel DG6 No 8351, Marshall traction engine No 78312 Rob Roy and Fowler tractor No 17470 Bonnie Lass, now part of the Nicol collection. Two engines which surprisingly haven’t been seen at this rally certainly in recent times were Fowler A9 Road Loco’s No 15462 Ajax and 15649 Providence, the pairing were put to good use on heavy haulage demonstrations. A further newcomer was the delightful ex South African 4 ton Aveling & Porter roller No 4698 of 1900. In the working area Fowler traction engine No 9055 was one of two engines driving saw benches. When new this engine was sold through agents in Melbourne, Australia, it was the first time it had been seen in steam at a Great Yorkshire Traction Engine club Rally. The traditional Saturday evening run down to the town was followed by entertainment and no less than a dozen showmans type engines in action around the beer tent, amongst these was Fowler No 17506 recently converted ex Reading Tar & Grout steam roller Undaunted.
